Balloons can be used for children’s amusement, as decoration, for parties, or for advertising. Some retail establishments provide novelty balloons that can be customised to include graphics, logos, or text.

A balloon is an inflatable, flexible bag filled with a gas, such as helium, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen, or simply air. Modern balloons can be made from materials such as rubber, latex, polychloroprene, or a nylon fabric. Balloons can be given as gifts for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries and are often used in place of a bunch or bouquet of flowers. Balloons are also often used as party decorations, from simple children’s birthday parties to elaborate wedding or convention decorations.

Balloons are often used for publicity at major events or for advertising at a premises. Screen printing processes can be used to print designs and company logos onto balloons, whilst nylon balloons can be built in nearly any imaginable shape or size. Large nylon balloons are often seen tethered outside a retail business in order to draw the attention of passers-by. This type of promotion is also a cost-effective method to advertise a new business.

Novelty balloons can be purchased from retail gift and novelty shops, or ordered from balloon specialists. Screen printed and advertising balloons are sold by both retail and wholesale suppliers.
