‘Face painting’ is mentioned in the Old Testament and Ancient Egyptians used foundation and in 200 BC ancient Greek women applied white lead powder and chalk to lighten their skin. Changing our appearance to reflect what is considered beautiful in any era is down to the science and art of cosmetics.

The most influential new development in cosmetics is that of the movie industry in Hollywood. Among those who saw the opportunity for mass-market cosmetics were Max Factor, Elizabeth Arden, and Helena Rubinstein – all cosmetics manufacturers who have gone on to become international brands. Modern synthetic hair dye was invented in 1907 by Eugene Schueller, founder of L’Oreal. Eye make-up is a very important part in any preparation. Highlighting the eyes is often the only cosmetic procedure followed by women, and men – the eyes can lighten up the face by themselves.

Lipstick defines the shape and the volume of the lips and a lip plumper gives an illusion of more volume. Powder works like a concealer, except that it might also give the person a fairer or more tanned appearance. Other beauty cosmetics include nail polish, blush, and rouge. There is even lotion that gives a tanned, sparkly look to the skin – every month it seems there is a new product that will give you the aesthetic edge if you use it. Cosmetics is never going to let you down if you’re looking for innovation.

People use make-up because it gives them a better or at least different appearance to their natural look. This increases their confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. Make-up can also be used to shock and even subvert the idea of ‘beauty’ – something young people like to experiment with. Cosmetics is the cheapest way to give yourself a feel-good new look.
