Nannies

A nanny is an individual who takes care of children when the parents are away. Nannies and au pairs provide baby sitting and childcare services and may work with a family on a temporary, casual or permanent basis.

A nanny may work part-time or full-time and hours of work are negotiable. Some nannies will live in with the family, whilst others will work only certain hours within the home. A nanny may also provide additional or specialist babysitting or childcare services, including tutoring and first aid or may have some medical expertise. Nannies can also be engaged to provide services at corporate events, at hotels and holiday resorts and even for air travel. Traditionally an au pair performs babysitting or childcare duties only, but may also perform household and other tasks on request.

There are many levels of nanny and au pair services available, ranging from students working part time to supplement their income, through to highly experienced and qualified professionals. Many professional nannies will work through an agency, which provides billing, reference and other management services. It is common to request a police check before employing a nanny or au pair, and also to request references from past employers. There are many childcare and babysitting options available. Discussing your particular needs and expectations is very important when choosing a nanny or au pair.
