Family Planning

Family planning centres located all over the country conduct health promotion programs, train health professionals, and even undertake research. The staff at a family planning centre is trained to give you all possible assistance to make relevant and informed choices about your health and well-being.

Family planning is the planning and control of when and how to have children and the techniques, knowledge and practices which are associated with that planning. Family planning services provide medical, social and educational services which allow individuals, including minors, to determine freely the number and spacing of their children and to select the means by which this may be achieved.

Family planning services deal extensively with sexual and reproductive health matters for both men and women, and may be government funded or supported, or may be private medical practitioners and services. The range of sexual health information that is offered by such services may cover topics such as contraception, infertility, menopause, pregnancy, sex and ageing, sex and chronic illness, STIs and BBVs, ovarian and testicular cancer.

Additional state or federal government sources may provide extended or specialist sexual and reproductive health information relevant to women, on topics such as breast health, cervical health, endometriosis, menopause, periods, premenstrual syndrome, vaginal health, and vulval health. Government services will also provide disability services and have support for language needs, for both men and women.
