Traffic Surveys

Traffic surveying is a process that consists of essentially measuring the amount of traffic that goes through a specific geographical area, within a specific time frame. While this might seem like a curious idea, there are really several purposes why one might want this information. The survey team will set up equipment which is designed to count the car flow during that given time frame. The process, of course, can also be completed manually, by counting the cars that way instead.

Traffic surveying is useful for many reasons. Perhaps you’re looking at opening a business, such as a gas station, on a particular road or highway. You’re going to want to get some sort of projections as to what you think your business will accomplish, which of course will really be based upon how many people are passing through that particular geographic area on a given day. Now of course the weekdays will generally hold more traffic due to consumers going to and coming from work, so you’ll probably want to have a survey done on both the weekends and during the week; also focusing on the various ‘rush hour’ periods, as well as everything in between.

Surveying doesn’t have to be exact, as it’s not designed in such a way. You can even take a 15 minute or so time frame within a specific time slot (i.e. rush hour coming home from work), and multiply the numbers to get an approximate idea of how many cars will be passing through that day. Generally, it’s better to have the survey crew take readings for a few hours, though, as it will give you a better picture of what to expect.
