Pet food and supplies can be purchased from many different businesses. Traditionally the most common way to buy pet food is from the supermarket, however as the focus on holistically improving the life and health of pets grows and with it the amount of money people are prepared to spend on their pets, so too does the pet food and pet supplies industry.

Pet stores are a very popular place to buy pet food and will carry a wide range of food types, for birds, cats, dogs, fish, reptiles and horses, as well as many other species. Food for cats and dogs especially is now available in nearly as many varieties as human food, including vegetarian, organic, preservative free, gluten free, low salt, low fat and other options. Veterinarians are also a popular place to buy food for cats and dogs but may not carry many other forms of foods.

Produce and other fresh food markets sell a range of pet foods and may have onsite pet stores and pet supplies businesses as well. Butchers are a favourite place to source cheap bones and other meat offcuts for dogs, as well as cheaper “pet” grade minced meat for dogs and cats. Food for more exotic pets like reptiles must be carefully sourced and can often be obtained from breeders.
