Fire, Marine, Accident and General Insurance

Fire Insurance is used to cover damage to a property caused by fire. Fire insurance is a specialized form of insurance beyond property insurance, and is designed to cover the cost of replacement, reconstruction or repair beyond what is covered by the property insurance policy. Policies cover damage to the building itself, and may also cover damage to nearby structures, personal property and expenses associated with not being able to live in or use the property if it is damaged. A fire insurance policy may contain exclusions based on the cause of the fire, such as not covering fires caused by wars.

Commercial marine insurance covers the loss or damage of ships, cargo, terminals, and any transport or cargo held between the points of origin and final destination. Private marine insurance covers pleasure craft such as motor boats, yachts and other personal boats. Cargo insurance is a sub-branch of marine insurance, though marine also includes onshore and offshore exposed property (container terminals, ports, oil platforms, pipelines); hull; marine casualty; and marine liability.

Accident insurance is a subset of health insurance and is often incorporated as part of sporting club or association registrations. Accident insurance will cover injuries and damages occurring during either a specified sporting activity or more broadly for a range of activities, but may have quite specific exclusion for “dangerous” sports. General insurance includes nearly all types of insurance except for those which have specific rules under government statute in Australia, including compulsory third party insurance, workers’ compensation, marine insurance and medical indemnity insurance.
