A general contractor manages construction or renovation projects as contracted with a client. The general contractor is responsible for managing the entire job from start to finish. A general contractor must first assess the project requirements, and in the case of renovations, visit the residential or industrial site to get a better understanding of the project. The general contractor will then calculate a price which is often referred to as a quote or estimate. For this estimate the general contractor considers the cost of materials and equipment as well as the cost of labour to complete the job.

General contractors are used by both residential homeowners and commercial enterprises. For the residential homeowner, projects including renovations may require the services of a general contractor. A kitchen or bathroom renovation could easily need the services of cabinet and countertop installers, flooring installers, tile professionals, plumbers, window installers, and electricians. A general contractor can pull this all together, provide contractor management, offer contractor solutions, as well as coordinate with the various companies, and make sure everything is happening on time and to budget.

Commercial enterprises may have larger building projects such as the refurbishment of a factory and it is the general contractor’s job to oversee this refurbishment. This might involve hiring subcontractors to undertake some of the work involved and it is the general contractors job to co-ordinate the subcontractors.
