A guide on trailer parts and accessories

When owning a trailer, it is important to familiarise yourself with the parts and accessories coming with it. Knowing how each part works is the first step in how to properly use and maintain your trailers. Lets trail:

  • Hitch Ball: A must for attaching a trailer to a tow truck safely. It connects to the ball mount and is what the coupler on the trailer is secured to. Hitch balls are available in different sizes with common diameters of 1-7/8”, 2”, and 2-5/16”.
  • Ball Mount: A removable bracket that locks into the hitch, and secures the hitch ball to be attached to the trailer. They are used to properly level with the trailer. Some ball mounts come with a ball already attached.
  • Wiring Adapter: This is needed when supplying power to the trailer’s lights.
  • Safety Chain: A crisscrossed safety chain should form an “X-shape”, and connect from the trailer to the tow vehicle as an added level of security in case the hitch ball becomes separated.
  • Ramps: For easy loading and unloading of equipment, some trailers have a foldable ramp already attached. If this is not present, source trailer parts near you for some options.

Depending on the size and the type, enclosed trailers and utility trailers may require additional safety accessories. This may also be the case for custom trailers. For more information, browse our listings of trailers and trailer parts merchants. They can give you advices on which trailer parts are the best for your trailers.
