Trailers – it’s going to be a bumpy ride
Index
It can be very normal for a trailer to rattle and bang when being towed. This can be the case regardless of whether or not the trailer is full or empty.
Rattle and Bang
Trailers are made up of metal parts and many of these rub against each other when the trailer is in motion. Many trailers also contain wood which can also create unusual sounds when moving against other pieces of wood or metal. Sometimes you will discover that unusual sounds are actually coming from the goods you are towing, especially if it is an empty car.
Just a Dip in the Road
If you are towing a trailer and feel that it is jumping off the road a little when you hit a little dip, don’t panic, this can be perfectly normal. What isn’t normal if it the trailer jumps so much you feel like you can’t control it, or even worse that the trailer is controlling you. Lack of control over a trailer may indicate you are towing too heavy a load or that the trailer isn’t loaded correctly.
If you think there are sounds that aren’t quite right, get peace of mind by having them checked out by a professional. You also need to get brakes and suspension on your car and the brakes on the trailer checked regularly.
