Handy tips

They say happy wife happy life, but what about your fish aquarium?

What makes a fish happy? How can I accommodate my finned friend? Don’t panic! Yellow has all the answers you need and more.

  • Fish need time to acclimatise. Ask your local aquarium specialist what water parameters are best for your fish species. Nitrate, ammonia and pH levels all affect how your fish will cope in their new environment.
  • For 15 minutes to an hour let your fish float in a sealed bag in your aquarium. Then slowly add quarter cups of water at 5-minute intervals into the bag until full and you are ready to transfer your fish into their new home.
  • It’s fun to accessorise but remember to give your fish plenty of freedom. Too many fish and fish accessories in a tank can lead to low oxygen levels and a build-up of waste which can clog your filtration system.
  • It is recommended that you change 25% of your aquarium water at least once a month. This will keep the nitrate levels safe and help maintain a healthy aquarium.
  • Place your aquarium somewhere it won’t be exposed to too much sunlight that will increase the water temperature beyond healthy parameters for your fish species.
  • Ask your local fish aquarium shop what the optimal water and light parameters are for your fish species.

Now search for an aquarium store near you - and you are on your way to becoming the best fish parent flipper could ask for
