Coronary angiography is done in a cardiac catheterisation laboratory(Cath Lab) that look like operating theatres. . In addition to the cardiologist, a number of nurses, X-ray staff and cardiac technicians will be present. Once you are in the laboratory you will be moved onto an examination table positioned directly under an X-ray camera through which the angiography procedure can be viewed.
The echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. Patient will be required to lie on an examination bed and a technician will be utilising a transducer against the patient's chest to obtain two-dimensional images of the heart. Patient may be asked to roll on their side during the test, or hold their breath for a few seconds. The test takes approximately 30 minutes to be completed A cardiologist later reports on the findings and the results are usually available within two days.
Like any medical procedure, coronary angioplasty occasionally causes complications. However, in skilled hands these are rare. The doctor performing the investigation will discuss this with you before the test. Feel free to bring up any concerns or questions you have.
