Wedderburn is a quiet town in Victoria with a population of about 680. It is located 214 kilometres north of Melbourne and is known for its farming community.
History
The suburb of Wedderburn was called Korong until 1858. It is believed that the name changed to Rosebury around the time of 1884. Wedderburn’s early residents were gold miners.
In 1856, the first post office opened in the area. A man called Albert Jacka from Wedderburn was awarded the Victoria Cross in World War I. He was the first Australian to be given this medal. Albert Jacka later became the Mayor of St Kilda.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Wedderburn is home to the Hard Hill Reserve. It is a popular tourist attraction where people hope to find nuggets of gold. The town is big on sporting events including football, golf, netball and darts.
The Neighbourhood House building has a family history group and craft groups. It is also used as a tourist office and drop in centre. There are some shops, supermarkets and banks in the town.
