History
The Wurundjeri people are the first owners of the area around Kensington. They lived in the area up to 40,000 prior to European settlement.
Kensington fell within the City of Essendon when it was founded in 1861. In 1882, it split away to form the Borough of Flemington and Kensington. It was used for horse proving yards and abattoirs.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today Kensington has a strong village feel. There are several cafes and restaurants. Its architecture is also diverse, featuring Victorian terraces, cottages and converted warehouses.
J.J Holland Park is suburb’s main recreational area. It has three ovals, a BMX track, kids play areas, and a swimming pool. The suburb also has tennis facilities and a walking track along the Maribyrnong River.
