With a population of 11,075, Ivanhoe is a suburb of Melbourne. It is just 10km to the northeast of the city’s Central Business District. The Yarra River is its southern boundary.

History

Ivanhoe has had its own post office since 1874. The suburb was previously part of the City of Heidelberg.

The suburb is also home to Ivanhoe Primary School. This is one of Victoria’s oldest state schools. It was founded in 1853.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The former Heidelberg Town Hall sits in the centre of Ivanhoe. Situated atop a hill, it has a classic art deco design. Today, it is called The Centre Ivanhoe. Various shops, restaurants and other businesses are situated nearby.

Ivanhoe is widely renowned for its annual display of Christmas lights. Held on The Boulevard, this celebration attracts over 100,000 people to the suburb. The first displays took place in the 1950s.
