Welcome to Hawthorn, VIC
Hawthorn is an eastern suburb of Melbourne, located approximately 6kms from the CBD. The name Hawthorn, which has been streamlined from the 1840 original name ‘Hawthorne’, is thought to have been inspired by Charles La Trobe, the first lieutenant-governor of Victoria, who mentioned that the native shrubs looked like flowering Hawthorn bushes.
The Hawthorn township was first surveyed in 1837. Not much has changed since then in the way of the land mass that the suburb occupies, with the original township described as being bound by the Yarra River on its western border, Burke Road to the east and Barkers Rd to the north. As a predominantly middle to upper-class residential suburb, Hawthorn was populated with many large houses, many of which are on the register of the National Estate, and the suburb itself is a Conservation Area. Glenferrie Road has historically been the centre of commerce for the suburb of Hawthorn, a reputation that has not changed over the decades. To this day you will find a wide range of restaurants, shopping outlets and a bustling night life scene along Glenferrie Road.
Hawthorn is the home of Swinburne University of Technology, which offers university and TAFE courses. The suburb is also the home of a number of private schools, such as Erasmus School of Primary Education, St. Josephs Primary School and Scotch College, the latter being one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country.
