Tattooing

Tattooing is a form of body artwork where indelible ink is inserted into the second layer of skin, so that it remains once healed. The process involves adding a pigment, often coloured, to the skin via a series of small punctures with a specialised tool. As blood is present, the skin must be cleaned and disinfected – in advance, during and after the tattooing process. Sterilisation of the tattoo tool should also take place between clients. The tattoo is formed as the skin heals, forming scar tissue that contains the pigment. Professionally applied tattoos can be difficult to remove. Different techniques using a laser are often employed to perform removal.

Tattoo designs and practices have been used and applied for thousands of years, and today it continues to be a popular practice with younger people wishing to display a unique identity through their tattoos.
