Point of Sale Displays

Point of sale displays describes a kind of promotion of products on, next to or near the area where a customer pays – the “point of sale”. The intention is to draw special attention to new and upcoming products, or special offers and seasonal sales.

Point of sale displays come in many different varieties. This may include but is not limited to shelf edging, display stands (in metal or Perspex), floor and wall posters, banners, hanging mobiles, revolving floor carousels, or the classic cardboard or foamboard boxes. The idea is to make them easily replaceable and disposable and highly customisable. However, some may be more permanent such as lightboxes, where the product is highlighted with fluorescent lights, or a cooler for drinks and ice creams.

In smaller retail stores, you might find a more eclectic collection of displays. This is because the point of sale displays are supplied and maintained by the manufacturer rather than the store itself.

Typically, these displays are more useful in stores with limited space, since they take up wasted space on and around the check out counter.

Supermarkets and larger stores will have large purchasing power, allowing them to have greater control over their suppliers. This means that they are more likely to have more control over their point of sale displays and create ones that are more cohesive with their branding, store layout and corporate image.

Typical items that are promoted in point of sale displays at convenience stores include candy, chewing gum, comics, magazines, batteries, soft drinks and other ‘convenience’ items. Gift cards and reloadable cards can also often be found here.
