Engineers--General

The practice of engineering deals with the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the fields of designing, manufacturing, and operations.

An engineer plays an important role in the design and building of structures made out of a variety of building materials, as well as contributing to the design of machines, devices and systems. The traditional areas of engineering include chemical, civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineering, however, in recent years, especially with technological innovation, the field of engineering has experienced rapid evolution to include numerous new fields including biotechnology, forensic, risk, marine and environmental engineering.

A general engineer will have knowledge on general practices of machining, testing, fabrication and line boring, with many engineers having specialist skills in CNC, precision machining, 3D milling and 3D design. General engineering involves work with materials including chrome, rubber, plastic and stainless steel and an engineer’s expertise can be seen in structures including factories, silos, airports and offices as well as products including street furniture, handrails, balustrades, safety handrails and vehicles such as trailers, tractors, rollers and lift trucks. There are engineering principles in many of the systems and processes we use today, a flair for mathematics and science is also a common attribute in the practice of engineering.
