The Advantages of LP Gas Safety - There is plenty of evidence that LP Gas is as safe if not safer than any other fuel system available on the market. LP Gas has been used in Australia for more than 30 years; testimony to its high safety rating is that there are no insurance premiums applied to straight or dual fuel conversions. Visit our website to find out more.
LP Gas like petrol is a hydrocarbon fuel. It is mainly composed of propane and butane with a minor amount of propylene. LP Gas in its normal state is a vapour, but when moderately compressed, it becomes a liquid. This enables a vehicle with a full LP Gas cylinder to travel a similar distance as the same vehicle would travel on an equal amount of petrol, in most cases a consistent vehicle performance will be maintained with clean, smooth combustion under all driving conditions,
LPG has been used as a transport fuel for over 50 years and is controlled by State Government and Federal Government regulations and national codes. There is a lot of practical evidence that LPG powered vehicles are as safe, if not safer, than petrol powered vehicles. An LPG tank is less likely to rupture or explode on impact than a petrol tank.
In 1980, when new LPG pricing arrangements were introduced, the Commonwealth Government expected there to be an on-going substantial margin between the price of petrol and LPG of the order of 50%. This has been the trend for the last 15 to 20 years in Adelaide.
In Venturi systems there is about a 30% power loss, with vapour injection systems you only lose about 10% and with liquid injection and diesel gas you can gain up to 30%. The power loss is not noticeable under normal driving conditions, may only be noticed under heavy loads.
All LPG tanks are fitted with an automatic fill limiting device which cuts off the flow to the LPG tank at 80% of its full capacity. This allows for expansion of the gas on hot days.
Leaking LPG is cooled as some of the liquid is vaporised. A leak may show up as a white cloud and ice may form around the leak. Leaks can usually be identified by a strong smell, similar to rotten eggs.
All good quality engine oil as recommended by the manufacturer are suitable, no special oils are needed.
Most types of vehicles can be converted including sedans, station wagons, utilities, tray tops, trucks, 4wd's.The list includes petrol and diesel powered vehicles.
Virtually all LPG used in Australia is produced here. Substantial quantities of LPG are exported as surplus to our requirements. Known reserves of gas are far greater than those of crude oil from which petrol is derived. So LPG will remain readily available well into the future. In all Australian States the major insurance companies do not impose an extra premium or penalty for LP Gas fuelled vehicles. This further confirms the inherent safety of conversions.
