FAQs

  • Why service my evaporative air-conditioner?

Evaporative A/C systems are a source of bacteria, moulds, algae and sediments. Servicing your air-conditioner will make your unit last longer, work more efficiently and improve air hygiene.

  • Why does my air-conditioner smell?

Your A/C may require pad replacement or may need cleaning and sanitising.

  • Do I need to have doors or windows open when my evaporative A/C is on?

Evaporative air-conditioning works by blowing cool air into your home and forcing the warm air out. Security vents or relief vents can be installed in place of having doors or windows open.

  • How many windows do I need open and which ones?

This is dependent on how much air you are blowing into the house. It is also important to consider what areas of the home you want the most air to pass through and what direction the external wind is coming from.

  • Why is my evaporative air-conditioner not cooling?

This is generally related to a water issue of some kind. The A/C may not be filling up due to problems with solenoids or float valves. Filter baskets and hoses may be blocked. Water pump may not be working. Pads are in a deteriorated condition. Not enough or too many doors and windows open.

  • What is the best brand of evaporative air-conditioner?

For value for money I believe the Braemar system made by Seeley International is the best system. The Braemar has a fully enclosed fan motor, automatic drain valve ad a quality tornado water pump.

  • How much does an evaporative air-conditioner cost to run?

Ducted evaporative air-conditioning can cost as low as 12 cents an hour to run. Considerably less that reverse-cycle.

  • Do evaporative air-conditioners use a lot of water?

Ducted evaporative coolers must refresh their water supply otherwise it can become too salty, and a range of water management systems are used by different brands/models. Ask about the water management system used and what the typical hourly water consumption is likely to be in your area.

  • Can I replace just my evaporative A/C or do I need to replace my ducting as well?

It is not a problem to replace one but not the other. Always thoroughly inspect your ducting as deteriorated ducting will affect the performance of the system.

  • How often do I need to replace my filter pads?

This depends on the area that you live in, the amount of use and the quality of water. Proper servicing of your system also affects the longevity of the pads.
