The practice of architecture, urban design, master planning, interior architecture, heritage and conservation and space planning is our life and has been for over 40 years.

Our experienced team brings together an extensive depth of talent and skills in architecture, interior design, master planning, urban design and heritage management.

With a track record of over 40 years in servicing the needs of corporate, government and individual clients, MPA remain committed to delivering outstanding design solutions coupled with a high level of personal service. Led by Roger MacCallum and supported by our creative mix of younger individuals, key staff collaborate with our team of energetic, diverse and experienced consultants and client representatives to deliver economic, socially and ecologically sustainable projects of the highest standard.

Architecture

The MPA design studio works in the spirit of enquiry, challenging preconceptions and testing conventions. We are committed to design excellence which responds to the needs of clients; design which is efficient and respects human values, and delivers sustainable outcomes in the built form. We believe the best architecture comes from a synthesis of all the elements that separately comprise and inform the character of a building, the structure that supports it; the services that allow it to function; its ecology; the quality of natural light; the symbolism of form; and the relationship of the development to its urban context. Architecture is the physical expression of the preferences of societies in which we live, work and play. We believe in respecting the environment of these various communities and in creating innovative commercially responsible sustainable solutions.

Interior Design

At MPA our main focus for interior design is on the client – their beliefs, requirements and their culture – how they will use the space and their overall vision. We create inspired spaces where the user enjoys the experience. We provide knowledge and experience combined with current and future design thinking. With our architecture and interior design team working closely together under one roof, the final outcome of the projects show a clear and coherent finish. Our ultimate goal is to produce interior spaces that not just visually attractive by effective, functional places in which we work, live or play.

Project Management

Effective leadership and professional management of the development process is critical to a successful outcome of any project and MPA offers a comprehensive project and development application management service that draws on our forty years' experience in providing services to clients in the development industry, and to all tiers of government.

Collaboration between client, authorities and agencies, specialist consultants and technical experts, effective co-ordination team leadership and management has enabled MPA to deliver successful, sustainable, commercial viable solutions by our multi-disciplined teams.

A high degree of personal service, coupled with respect for the precious resources of cost and time, is reflective of our client relationship philosophy.

FAQs

  • Can you help us find an engineer and any other consultants we might need?

Yes, we can. We have a large group of specialist consultants who we use regularly and obtain competitive fee quotations from if required by the client, should they not have done so independently. We encourage competitive pricing of all aspects of the work.

  • How much will the design of my house / development cost?

This is entirely dependent on site conditions, size and scope of the building, statutory requirements and numerous other considerations. It is not reasonably possible to estimate a project cost without some idea of project scope, the areas involved and site location and topography.

  • Do I need a planning permit for my project?

You may need to. It mainly depends on its impact on neighbours. Many domestic projects that are designed compliant with codes and regulations do not need a planning permit.

  • Are you locally owned and operated?

Yes - 100% locally owned and operated and have been for 23 years in North Queensland.

  • When was your business established?

Our business was established in 1972 in Sydney, in 1975 in Melbourne and then 1993 in Townsville North Queensland.

  • When do I have to pay for the design?

Design costs are generally billed at pre-agreed stages as part of the architectural/client contract. Should a project stall or not proceed the amount due at that point is clearly included in the contract document. The stages can be sketch design, development design, contract documents, and for involvement, and project management during construction.

  • How do I prepare for my first meeting with the architect?

It is best to prepare a brief which could include any cuttings or scrapbook of images, a list of accommodation requirements including rooms and size, title particulars of the land and a survey plan if you have one.

  • What can I expect from my architect and our working relationship?

In short a result that meets and exceeds your expectations. Chemistry between architect and client is important - It's vital that you "get" each other and what you are trying to create without too much explanation. The architect should have knowledge of the local area, and experience with your project type.
