Gin Gin is a rural town located on the Bruce Highway in the Bundaberg region of Queensland. It lies 51km west of Bundaberg and 370km north-west of Brisbane. The population is over 1,190.
History
Gin Gin is an aboriginal word meaning ‘red soil thick scrub’. This pastoral area of land was first settled by explorers Gregory Blaxland and his son-in-law William Forster. The first post office opened in 1875. The railway line built during the 1880s linking Bundaberg to copper mining centre Mt Perry passed through Gin Gin.
The area is also known as ‘Wild Scotsman Country’ after the notorious bushranger James Alpin who was captured not far from the town.

Gin Gin is a renowned highway stopover between Brisbane and the cosmopolitan area of Rockhampton. The sugar industry is the backbone of Gin Gin’s economy.
The town is just a short distance from the gateway to Barramundi fishing – Lake Monduran. For nature lovers, Good Night Scrub National Park is home to a vast array of wildlife and listed bird species.
