FAQs

  • What are cataracts?

Cataracts are an opacity which develops in the lens of the eye. The lens is located behind the iris. A more detailed explanation is located on our cataracts page.

  • When should I have my child's eyes tested?

If you have concerns about your child's vision or if there is a family history of turned eyes, lazy eyes, any childhood eye problems or if you just need reassuring, your child's eyes can be tested at any age. As a general rule children's eyes should be tested during their prep year.

  • How many examinations can I have in one year?

Simply put, as many as it takes. Medicare provides for full consultations every 2 years. There are extra provisions for new problems and ongoing complicated problems. Medicare also allows for short consultations, so you are always welcome.

  • What is a macular degeneration?

Firstly, there is "dry macular degeneration" and a "wet macular degeneration". While both of these conditions damage the macula in the back of the eye. They are quite different in their symptoms and progression. Dry MD is an age-related slow degeneration of the macular and foveal region in the back of the eye. It typically affects people over 60 years of age. There is more information on the macular degeneration page.

  • Will my eye test cost me anything?

No, initial examinations are bulk billed to Medicare. Some items like OCT scans and some contact lens examinations are not covered by Medicare. You will always be advised of these costs before proceeding.

  • If there is a family history of eye disease, what should I do?

Have an eye test and tell the Optometrist all about your family history. Before the eye test, find out all you can about the disease, who has it, what medication do they take, what surgery have they had and when did they find out they had this disease.

  • How often should I have my eyes tested?

We recommend an eye test every 2 years. If you have any problems or if you are at risk of developing an eye disease, we will suggest you have an eye test more often.
