What is the difference between a split system and a multi split system?

A split system has an indoor and outdoor part that is connected together. Meanwhile a multi split system has just the one outdoor part that is connected throughout the house through multiple indoor parts installed in each room. So while a split system powers up the one room, a multi split system powers up the whole house from one outdoor part.

Will you be able to fix my air conditioner on the same day?

As much as we would love to do this, it is not always possible. Though we keep many of the regularly used parts in our vehicles all the time, it is almost impossible to keep all parts for all models. Parts need to be sourced from the supplier which may not be on the same day but we promise to get it fixed as soon as we get our hands on what is needed.

Who should install my HVAC system?

By law, all installations of split system air conditioners must be carried out by a licensed HVAC technician. They are qualified to complete all of the tasks required to successfully install an air conditioner, including connection of the pipes that carry refrigerant through the unit. The refrigerant in the unit, if it escapes into the atmosphere, will contribute to global warming. A licensed technician has the appropriate training and skills to minimize the risk of this happening.

How often should I get my air conditioning system serviced?

Generally, once a season. We will ensure your air conditioning system works at its optimum capacity but this depends on the environment or air purity. In 1-3 months is recommended.

Will I pay the call-out twice if you need to return to fix the system another day?

Never. We pride ourselves in fair billing. Everything after the call-out allotted time is then on an hourly rate. So, if the technician returns to carry out a repair this does not incur another call-out charge.

Why is quality of ducting and fittings just as important?

Some clients make is being lured in by systems with larger capacity however cost cutting by using cheaper inferior quality ducting and fittings. Regardless of the size of your system your air needs to travel through these fittings and ducting to get to you. Throughout our experience we have seen many cases where the ducting has collapsed, come apart, fittings cracked etc. Some ducting is so hard to access especially in double storey houses that it becomes almost impossible to replace.

What is the ARCTick refrigeration handling authorisation?

The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) administers refrigerant handling licenses and refrigeration trading authorisations to air conditioning companies on behalf of the Australian Government. Their aim is to help protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants. Unicorn Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Pty Ltd is an authorised ARC business, plus our air conditioning technicians are all fully licensed and insured.

Is it worth getting my 10-year air conditioning system fixed?

This will depend on how well it has been maintained in the previous years. If the system has been fully neglected we usually recommend replacing the system. We suggest getting the system looked at to get an idea on the cost of repairing it and going from there.

Can you top up my gas?

We absolutely love this and is the most requested thing by clients who contact us. Refrigerant gas is used in air conditioners to produce heat and cooling. You’ll notice the air coming out may not be as cool or warm as it should be. Unfortunately, leaks do occur. This could be due to poor installation or the system being knocked or bashed accidently causing seals to break. The leak may be present over a period of months and may not be noticeable till most of the gas has leaked.

Does the right size unit really matter?

Yes, it does. Choosing a bigger size unit then what is recommended will only be a waste of money and may operate inefficiently. It may also cause vibration and outdoor noise level which may cause disturbance to the neighbours especially for strata residence. A small size unit will not get you the comfortable temperature that you require and will result in high electricity bills because the unit is being overworked.
