FAQs

  • Do you accept new patients?

Yes, we welcome all new patients. Please call us to book an appointment. If applicable, please bring your current medication & any other relevant information with you.

  • I gave my details to you last week! Why do you always ask for my details?

Every time you check in for an appointment the receptionist will ask for: Your Medicare Card and three (3) identifying points of data (such as your full name, date of birth and address). This is a legal requirement stipulated by Medicare. It is also important to make sure the correct patient is booked in to see the doctor and a good prompt to remind patients to update details that may have changed since their last visit. We will also ask for an emergency contact name and phone number.

  • Why isn't my doctor on time?

All doctors strive to be on time but unfortunately may run late if there has been an emergency or some other delay beyond our control. As each consultation varies in length, it is not always possible for the receptionist to predict how late the doctor is running or to contact patients when their doctor is running late. If you wish, you are welcome to call before your appointment time to check if the doctor is on time.

  • What happens when my doctor is on leave or not at work?

When our doctors are not available they have a designated replacement who will attend to their patients. They will have access to your fully computerised file and will confer with your doctor as needed to ensure continuity of care. Reception can advise you on your treatment options when your doctor is not available.

  • How do you manage my privacy when you call me?

Our staff may contact patients by phone to confirm an appointment or pass on messages from the doctors. Due to the Privacy Act, our receptionists are unable to identify that they are calling from Illawarra Family Medical Centre until they are sure they are speaking directly to the patient. Please understand that this is to protect your privacy. If you give us permission, we may speak to somebody else. If you would like this to be recorded in your file; please ask for a form at reception.

  • How do you manage the privacy of medical records?

We comply with National Privacy Principles. It is the policy of this practice to maintain security of personal health information at all times and to ensure that this information is only available to authorised members of staff. A copy of our privacy policy is available on request from reception. Your medical records are legally the property of your doctor; if you require your records to be transferred please ask reception for the relevant form. A fee may be charged for this service.

  • How can I get my results?

Results from tests are downloaded daily. These results are then checked and signed by the referring doctor. You will be contacted by the nurses if your doctor requests that your results be followed up. We will not routinely call patients with normal results unless asked by the doctor. If you wish to obtain your results, please call the nurses who are able to access your results. Copies of results will not be given to patients without your doctors' approval. PAP smear results are mailed.

  • Where are you located?

We are at LV1 338-340 Crown Street, Wollongong, NSW 2500.

  • How do we contact you?

Call us at (02) 4252 5200. To call us beyond our opening hours, contact our radio doctor at (02) 4228 5522. To contact us in emergencies, call 000. The GP helpline is 1800 022 222.
