When it gets down to it, to reupholster your furniture correctly I start at the base. I ensure your frame is strong, then rectify and reinforce, especially in areas where you need support (seat bases and lower lumbar in back). Most older furniture is relatively good and only needs minor adjustments. In newer furniture, certain things need to be reinforced to give you the support that is required. This in turn gives you long-lasting furniture and great value for your outlay.
I discuss all these issues with you. I want you to be happy with all aspects of your furniture, including comfort, support and durability. I want your furniture to last and be more cost effective for you. Quite often people say to me, "oh is it that expensive to get this recovered, I can buy a new lounge suite for that", but the difference is that you pay it once and you get 15-20 years out of it, whereas you would have to buy 2-3 new lounges to last the same period.
I started my apprenticeship in 1975 at Fubbs Furniture in Sydney. In 1976 I went with the foreman of Fubbs to start a new business that incorporated new contract furniture for Fubbs & Buckley in Sydney and also started furniture restoration in antiques and modern re-upholstery. I have worked in all facets of the trade from old to new and custom furniture building. 14 years later I moved and become foreman of a company that mainly restored antiques. In 1991 I bought Gelders Upholstery.
