Welcome to Queanbeyan, NSW

The City of Queanbeyan is located within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area on the Southern Tablelands of southeastern New South Wales. It takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning “clear waters” and the area has a population of almost 38,000 people.

History

The innkeeper and ex-convict Timothy Beard was one of the first settlers in the area. He held a squattage on the Molonglo River bank about one mile west of where the town centre of Queanbeyan now stands. In 1838 when the area was officially declared a township there were only around 50 people living there at the time.

The area began to flourish in 1851 when evidence of gold was found in the area and there was also a brief period of lead and silver mining. The Post Office was opened in 1836 and the bank also started trading in the town 1878. The region was given the status of a city in 1972 on 7th of July.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The City has several primary and secondary schools and boasts a small but modern hospital with ER and maternity facilities. A performing arts centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a library provide for plenty of leisure pursuits.

The area is a mix of residential and light manufacturing developments including the 720 panel Queanbeyan Solar Farm providing 50 kW of power. The retailing of roses to the locality is also makes a significant contribution to the City’s economy.
