The inner west suburb of Petersham is located only 6km outside of Sydney’s central business district. It is a part of the Inner West Council local government area and is well known for Portuguese food and restaurants. The region has a population of over 7,500 people.

History

Named after the village in Surry England by Francis Grose, the suburb was first settled as a rural community in 1803. A Dr Robert Wardle who purchased large tracts of land in the area in 1831 built up an estate that covered 2,000 acres.

The Sydney to Parramatta Railway line arrived in 1857 and a platform was built in the suburb in 1863. Post offices opened in the area in 1855 and 1860 and the first public school was operating in the suburb by 1878.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area boasts several Portuguese restaurants and businesses that have a reputation for traditional style ethnic foods. The main shopping area is located on New Canterbury Road and Audley Street. The suburb is well served by schools including Forte High Street School which is New South Wales oldest selective school.

There are several notable and heritage buildings in the area including churches, the Majestic Theatre, and a Masonic Temple. Transport is provided by the Sydney Trains Network and easy access to the road system.
