The northern beachside suburb of Palm Beach is situated 41km outside of Sydney’s central business district and it is a part of the Northern Beaches Council local government area. The area is famous as the filming location for the popular TV series “Home and Away” and has a population of 1,600.
History
Maps show that in 1852 the Cabbage Tree Boat Harbour was the main feature of the area. By the 19th century the few Europeans and Chinese inhabitants of the area where making a living from fishing.
By 1912 the plots being offered in the area were taken up by those wanting second homes. The region has become further settled as a residential area but even today it is still fairly underdeveloped and secluded.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Palm Beach is a popular tourist area and has many cafes, restaurants, and bed and breakfast facilities. There are shops, areas of natural beauty, and a variety of sports facilities too. Since being founded in 1921, the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club has been located on the beach. The area also caters for golf, sailing, tennis, fishing, and soccer.
The Palm Beach Seaplane service operates between the suburb and Rose Bay and other locations. There is also a ferry that operates from the town centre to Patonga and there is good road access too.
