Pagewood is an eastern suburb of Sydney, NSW. It is 8km south of Sydney’s CBD. According to the 2011 census, it Pagewood has a population of over 3,600.

History

Pagewood was to be a garden suburb. But with a shortage of land for housing following World War I, this changed.

In 1919, it began development as Monash Gardens. The suburb became ‘Pagewood’ in 1929. This was to honour Botany Council’s Alderman F.J. Page.

The council considered renaming Pagewood ‘East Botany’ in 1960. Residents said Botany was industrial. As Pagewood was residential, ‘East Botany’ wasn’t suitable.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Pagewood has residential and industrial areas. Film production house National Studios opened in 1935. It produced Australian and British cinema for three decades. General Motors’ Pagewood plant produced Holden cars between 1940 and 1981.

In 1987, Westfield Eastgardens opened. Built on the old Pagewood bus depot site, the mall has a bus interchange. The complex covers the National Studios and Holden sites.
