FAQs

  • What size are the rolls of turf?

1 ROLL = 11m². The size of our rolls are 450mm wide x 2.22m long and approx. 25mm thick.

  • What type of soil should I use?

The type of soil needed in your project will vary depending on your location; you should contact us or your nearest nursery and ask for some advice on the soil requirements for the area you live.

  • Can I lay turf on sand?

Matilda Buffalo performs well in sand, due to the nature of sand the moisture escapes easily, it is best to prepare your base with some water crystals and introduce some organics into the mix, such as dynamic lifter or manure, this will help hold the moisture better and save on water usage.

  • How much soil should I use?

Most turf will grow on almost any depth of soil. It is worthwhile to have al least 100mm of good soil as will encourage the roots to grow deep into the soil base and avoid the heat of the sun, the turf can obtain water from deep down in the ground and thus requires less watering to maintain the lush green look.

  • When should I fertilise my lawn?

You should place a starter fertilizer under your new lawn, and then fertilize again about 4 weeks after lying. Once established your lawn should be fertilized 3-4 times per year, usually at the beginning of each season (summer, autumn, winter, spring). We would recommend the Matilda Build fertilizer which can be purchased from our online shop.

  • When can I mow my newly laid lawn?

The first mowing should be conducted once the roots have taken hold of the ground. You should set you mower to a high setting (40-50mm) for the first few times, as this promotes deep root growth. Does not mow more than 1/3 or the leaf in one mow, if you need to take more than this do it in 2-3 stages.

  • Should I top dress my lawn?

Your lawn generally only needs to be top-dressed to create a more level surface, it is not required for the health of your turf.

  • What is the best grass for shade?

We would recommend Matilda Buffalo for shade. It has the highest shade rating from the turf we produce; it also is the highest wearing buffalo, which is great for families with kids and pets. Matilda is a very soft turf and generally will not cause irritations to the skin. For shaded areas you will need to keep your lawn longer than normal, it is also best if a few hours of sun are available.

  • How heavy is one turf roll?

This will depend on the water content of the turf. Generally one roll will be about 10kgs, if it has rained recently this could go to 15kgs. You will need to take this into account when loading your trailer as not to exceed the weight requirements of your trailer.
