Menai is a new suburb, located 29km south of Sydney’s central business district. It is a part of the local government area of the Sutherland Shire and has a population of over 10,500 people.
History
Menai has some interesting historical connections to Wales in the United Kingdom. The town was first named Bangor by a Welsh farmer called Owen Jones who named his new home after his birthplace.
In 1910, the Postmaster General’s office changed the name of the town to avoid any confusion with another place called Bangor in Tasmania. Menai was chosen in honour of Menai Bridge, a bridge over the Menai Strait in Wales, very close to Bangor!
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The area around Menai Road is home to a busy shopping centre which has a number of retail stores and restaurants. Other retail developments include Menai Metro and the Menai Marketplace which has both supermarkets and speciality shops.
