Maclean is a riverside town in New South Wales. It is located on the Clarence River in the Northern Rivers region. It is part of the local government area of Clarence Valley, and it has a population of 5,061.

History

In the 1830s, cedar trees started to be cut down in this region. In 1865, the sugar industry took off here. The town inherited its name from the Surveyor-General Alexander Grant McLean.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Maclean is known as Australia’s “Scottish Town”. Many road signs here are dual language, and appear in both English and Scottish Gaelic. Tartan is also used to decorate the power poles. In 1986, a group was put together within the community to ensure the town’s Scottish roots continued to flourish.

The Maclean Highland Gathering takes place during Easter. Caber tossing, bagpipes and highland dancing all feature in this popular festival.
