Welcome to Lightning Ridge, NSW
This thriving tourist town has a population of just over 4,500. It owes its fame to the mining of opals in the area, and has the largest known deposit of black opals in the world.
History
It was named by a group of people passing through the area in the 1870s. It is thought they discovered the bodies of a farmer and his hundreds of sheep which had been struck by lightning.
The town’s population has fluctuated over the years with miners coming and going. A population boom in the early twenty-first century is thought to be due to the successes of the town’s mining industry.
