Our specialist orthodontists, Dr Grant Keogh (BDSc MDS , University of Sydney, FICD) and Dr Chia Ling Chou (BDSc, Uni of Melbourne, MDSc , University of Western Australia) have both undergone further specialist training for 3 years after their basic dental training. Both Dr Keogh and Dr Chou enjoy the ongoing nature of the specialty, working both with adult, teenagers and children. They find it rewarding to observe growth and development in children and teenagers overtime.

The treatment may involve the use of plates, braces, or a combination to bring teeth and jaw into proper alignment. In certain cases, orthognathic (jaw) surgeries may also be required to achieve optimal outcomes. Most people are very self-conscious of how their teeth look when they smile. For many, having straight teeth and an attractive smile may enhance self-esteem. It can be hard to keep your teeth clean if they are crowded or overlapping. This can lead to tooth decay and gum problems. Straight teeth are much easier to clean.

No, there is no need for a referral. You can contact the orthodontist directly.
During the first visit, the patient is examined clinically. Some records such as plaster models of the teeth, photographs of the teeth and face and x-rays of the teeth and jaw may also be taken. This will enable the orthodontist to formulate an individualised treatment plan and discuss treatment options.
The total duration of treatment ranges from 18 months to 36 months, depending on the presenting problems and age of the patient. Every individual also responds differently to treatment, resulting in variations in treatment duration. Patient cooperation is also a major determining factor.
Retainers (plates) are fitted after braces are removed to hold teeth in their corrected positions until the teeth are stabilised. There will be a period of full-time retainer wear followed by night-time wear. Night-time wear can prevent the maturational shifting of teeth as the patient ages.
The majority of patients still have metal braces with different coloured "rubber rings " However, there are less visible braces (clear braces) available.
It is normal to experience some discomfort for 3 - 5 days after the braces are first placed. Soft food is advised as well as over-the-counter pain relievers. If any ulceration (sores) occur, relief wax may be applied to the braces and some topical gel, e.g. Bonjela may be used on the sores.
