Welcome to Eastwood, NSW
The suburb of Eastwood is located 17km north-west of Sydney. It is a part of the local government areas of the Cities of Ryde and Parramatta. Its location close to the river means that it was most probably originally inhabited by aboriginals. The first Europeans started settling there following the arrival of the first fleet in 1788. The area now has a population of over 16,000 people.
History
The first land grants were made to marines and the NSW corps between 1790 and 1803. After gaining possession of some of the land in 1835, William Rutledge built Eastwood House on the land in 1840.
The railway arrived in 1886 and the land came under subdivision in 1905. The area continued to expand in both size and population and by the early 1980s, a shopping mall was constructed between the Avenue and West Parade.
