Cattle Pregnancy Testing:

We offer fast, cost competitive and highly accurate pregnancy testing of cattle, the majority with ultrasound, and manual if needed. NW Vets provides the full range of pregnancy testing services from whole herd testing through to feedlot heifer, sale yard, auctions plus & paddock sale work. NW Vets was the first veterinary clinic to utilise ultrasound technology for pregnancy diagnosis in cattle in this area. Five of our vets hold Australian Cattle Vet NCPD pregnancy diagnosis accreditation.

Herd Health Services:

NW Vets offers well beyond a pregnancy testing and scanning service. "We also provide reproductive performance analysis and investigation, vaccination and health management programs, bull breeding soundness evaluation, calving management, Willis DOT spaying, artificial insemination, disease surveillance and investigation as well as traditional "fire brigade" obstetrical, surgical and medicine services for beef cattle" Scott says.

Small Animal And Equine Services:

Both Coonamble and Walgett have modern, purpose-built veterinary clinics. Facilities in Coonamble include a fully equipped examination room, digital radiography, ultrasonography, ultrasonic dental machine, laboratory equipment, anaesthetic machines and monitoring (pulse oximetry and heated breathing circuits), heated floored hospital facilities with stainless steel cages, and a well-stocked pharmacy. We offer all types of surgery, including basic orthopaedic surgery, and have ready access to specialist advice and referrals.

FAQs

  • How do I find the clinic in Coonamble?

We are located in the south of Coonamble next to the airport. After turning off the Castlereagh Highway at Supa IGA, drive 2.5 km to the end of Wilga Street turn left and we are 200 metres down Effie Durham Drive, next to the River.

  • When do you come to Walgett and Lightning Ridge?

Our Walgett Hospital is open every Tuesday and Thursday, from 9am to 4pm. Desexings and basic surgeries can be performed here, along with a full small and large animal consultation service. Our Lightning Ridge clinic is open every Wednesday from 9am to 4pm. Please call for an appointment at the clinic most convenient to you.

  • What are your opening hours?

In Coonamble we are open Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 5:30pm. At night, on weekends and public holidays there is always a vet on call for all 3 clinics, based from Coonamble. Just call 6822 1381 and the answering machine will give you a mobile number to call.

  • When should I vaccinate my pup?

The Coonamble, Walgett and Lightning Ridge areas are notorious for potentially fatal parvovirus infections in young dogs. Every pup needs to be vaccinated to prevent this disease. We recommend a 4 vaccination programme at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks of age. If your pup is older than 6 weeks, just call us and we'll tailor a vaccination programme to protect your pup.

  • When is the best time to desex my dog?

To qualify for cheaper registration with your local Council, dogs are required to be desexed by 6 months of age. However, every dog is different, and our recommendations will change depending on size and sex. Please talk to our vets to work out the best time for your dog. A bitch has a greater risk of developing breast/mammary cancer later in life once she has her first heat at 6-9 months of age, so it is preferable to desex her before that heat.

  • Will desexing cause my pet to become fat?

Your pet's metabolism may be slowed due to hormonal changes after desexing, however this is easily managed with adjusting feeding and ensuring adequate exercise. There is no reason a desexed pet cannot be maintained at a normal weight. We see just as many obese entire animals as we do desexed ones.

  • After desexing will my dog lose its "guard dog" instinct?

No, your dog should be just as protective of their territory as before the surgery as this is a learned behaviour. Desexing a male dog will decrease aggression towards other dogs.

  • Do you sell pet food?

Yes, we sell a range of Australian made pet foods for large breed puppies, diet foods to help dog's lose weight, for active dogs and for older dogs. We also sell prescription diets for specific diseases, like liver disease, kidney disease and arthritis.
