The agricultural town of Coonamble is on the central western plains of New South Wales. It is about 575km north-west of Sydney. In 2011, the population was 2,998. Sheep farming has been an important contributor to the region’s economy since the 1980s.

History

Coonamble takes its name from the Gamilaraay word ‘guna’ (faeces) and ‘-bil’ (having lots of).

Infamous bushranger and last member of the Ben Hall gang, Johnny Dunn was captured near the town in 1865. A huge fire in 1929 destroyed many of the town’s original buildings.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Coonamble is home to Australia’s biggest rodeo and camp draft which takes place every June. This spectacular event draws thousands of people to the region.

West of Coonamble is the Macquarie Marshes. These wetlands are important breeding grounds for waterbirds and other species of wildlife. The best way to explore the marshes is by a guided kayaking or bushwalking tour.
