Welcome to Brooklyn, NSW
The small town of Brooklyn is only 51km from Sydney’s central business district. It is situated within the Hornsby Shire local government area on the Sydney side of the Hawkesbury River. The town sits on a narrow strip of land adjacent to the tidal waterfront and has a population of fewer than 1,000 people.
History
Originally a ferry crossing until the land was subdivided around 1884. The town was first established when the railway arrived in 1887. The building of the Hawkesbury Railway Bridge made the final connection with the Eastern Seaboard rail network.
The first road bridge was opened in 1945 and with extensive out filling from the embankment on the north bank the distance of almost 800 metres was reduced to 508 metres. The Duke and Duchess of York anchored their yacht in Cowan Creek in 1901.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Traditionally a rock oyster farming area, the industry took a major downturn in 2004 when QX disease almost wiped out the oysters. Some levels of controlled production have recently been started again. Sport is well represented in Brooklyn and the area holds regular fishing competitions.
The town’s railway station is served by the Main Northern Railway Line and the suburb is located close to the major highway network.
