Secret Harbour Veterinary Clinic

Initially we thought it was bad constipation and ocd licking turned out to be a very serious urinary blockage and we found out he was only 1 hour from rupturing. The receptionist had the experience to check with the vet when listening to the symptoms I mentioned to her about my boy. Instead of the afternoon booking I made with them, the vet asked me to get him there asap. She got him straight into surgery with no delay at all and drew a massive amount of urine and blood out. I felt so terrible once I knew what was really going on and if have waited until the afternoon to get him seen and we may have lost him or been in a much worse situation. He is only almost 2 and he is our everything. Dr Beth and her team were so gentle and calm with him and didn't add any other unnecessary stress and were upfront about everything all costs so we knew what we may be in for. I am also so moved as to how they went above and beyond for him, handfeeding and monitoring his wound and ongoing care and the fact they listened to everything I had to say even if it was off the mark meant a lot. There are so many reasons I like this vet but the main reason is sitting back at home with me now which is why I needed to leave this here. p.s As small way to thank this clinic and Dr Beth, I thought I owed the clinic the small gesture of addressing the negative comment below. My late cat of 15years ended up with intestinal cancer and her rare case was pretty hard to diagnose and then to treat. I had to go to 3 vets to come to turns with this as its very complicated and for my girls situation it was very difficult. So this negative comment below did not personally put me off bringing my cat to this clinic, especially considering how quick they fit him in and how serious they took our whole situation and aftercare. The honesty and upfront nature and good will I have seen from this clinic makes me doubt that comment was entirely true. Even after everything my boy went through, when bringing my boy back in for his appointment he still loved Dr Beth. He was so calm when she removed his stitches and to my shock he was not really all that worried considering his case was a little more challenging than most for reasons you can ask them about to preserve his modesty here.

Questions to ask the veterinary clinic at your next appointment

You’ve made the appointment. You’ve gone through the motions of transporting your pet. Make the most of your time and ensure its a productive encounter at the vet hospital. Here are a list of key and important questions to ask the vet.

  • What is a suitable diet? The foundation of good health is nutrition. Veterinarians near you can provide nutrition recommendations to support your pets lifestyle and stage.
  • Is the weight within a reasonable band? It's very easy to accidentally overfeed pets by mistaking reasonable portions or wanting to spoil them. Check with your vet if your pet's weight falls within an appropriate weight range for their breed.
  • Is this behaviour I have noticed normal? If you have observed any peculiarities or anything different this is the opportunity to raise them. Anything outside your pets normal behaviour could be symptomatic of a deeper issue. Track these incidents, when they started and their frequency.
  • Is my pet up to date on all their vaccines? Immunisations are necessary for a good defence to illnesses. Ensure the animal hospital has records of all vaccines and can flag outstanding ones.
  • Is a dental clean required? Periodontal diseases can be extremely common in pets and if left untreated can escalate into more serious health issues. A good cleaning when tartar or gingivitis appears will maintain good teeth and gum health before a more serious issue arises.
  • Do you suggest any flea / tick preventative measures? Before they become an issue, get proactive about flea collars or things to ward off fleas / ticks.

Be sure to also have anything else concerning looked into (lumps, bumps, etc). Armed with this checklist, you will make the most out of your checkout at the vet clinic.
