Wattle Grove Veterinary Hospital

I have been taking my 2 Sun Conures to Tim Oldfield for 9 years. Ra is a determined egg layer and this has compromised her health with calcium deficiencies and egg binding. Nug and Ra have had implants to discourage laying and avoid these problems for three years now - unfortunately Ra's didn't take last time and she ended up egg bound. Tim and the staff are brilliant. They really know and understand bird health and explain everything in terms I understand. They explain how to look after them and care about their patients as if they were their own. I honestly believe it is because of their teaching that I was able to recognise when Ra became egg bound and got her in before she became really sick. Tim was able to get her to pass the egg naturally and avoid surgery. If you are looking for someone to work with you to ensure the health of your birds - these guys are the best.

Questions to ask the veterinary clinic at your next appointment

You’ve made the appointment. You’ve gone through the motions of transporting your pet. Make the most of your time and ensure its a productive encounter at the vet hospital. Here are a list of key and important questions to ask the vet.

  • What is a suitable diet? The foundation of good health is nutrition. Veterinarians near you can provide nutrition recommendations to support your pets lifestyle and stage.
  • Is the weight within a reasonable band? It's very easy to accidentally overfeed pets by mistaking reasonable portions or wanting to spoil them. Check with your vet if your pet's weight falls within an appropriate weight range for their breed.
  • Is this behaviour I have noticed normal? If you have observed any peculiarities or anything different this is the opportunity to raise them. Anything outside your pets normal behaviour could be symptomatic of a deeper issue. Track these incidents, when they started and their frequency.
  • Is my pet up to date on all their vaccines? Immunisations are necessary for a good defence to illnesses. Ensure the animal hospital has records of all vaccines and can flag outstanding ones.
  • Is a dental clean required? Periodontal diseases can be extremely common in pets and if left untreated can escalate into more serious health issues. A good cleaning when tartar or gingivitis appears will maintain good teeth and gum health before a more serious issue arises.
  • Do you suggest any flea / tick preventative measures? Before they become an issue, get proactive about flea collars or things to ward off fleas / ticks.

Be sure to also have anything else concerning looked into (lumps, bumps, etc). Armed with this checklist, you will make the most out of your checkout at the vet clinic.
