Handy tips

Things to consider when buying a new trailer

A trailer is a big help for transporting and hauling equipment and therefore needs to be chosen carefully. A lot of variables should be considered when buying a trailer, more so for first time buyers. To help you trail better in your research, here are some guidelines:

  • What are you using the trailer for? There are different kinds of trailers in the market which cater for specific uses. Limit your choices based on the intended purpose. Enclosed trailers are perfect for protecting equipment and open utility trailers are good for towing tall furniture and landscape equipment. Other types are vehicle transport, landscaping, vending, living quarters, stackers, gooseneck, tilt, flatbed and tandem trailers.
  • How heavy are the contents you are going to tow? Overloading your trailer can cause cracks to appear on the frames and the axles. To lessen replacement of trailer parts, it is important to check the weight limit of the trailer package.
  • Is your truck capable of towing the trailer with ease? Choose a trailer that when overloaded, will not put too much stress in your vehicle.
  • Is a towing package already installed in your truck? Some trucks already have this but if not, purchase a steel frame tow package. Check for the balls and hitches if they provide the right support.
  • Does your trailer have that stopping power? Check the braking system of your trailer and how long will it take for a full stop. Getting the right braking system gets you and your equipment be better protected.
