Manufacturing steel is one of the most energy intensive processes of all industrial activities. The world produces about 1.5 billion tons of steel annually. On average the production of a ton of steel can generate about two tons of CO2. Normally, steel is produced by heating iron oxide up with carbon. Carbon dioxide is produced as a byproduct. The newly created process uses molten oxide electrolysis to create oxygen from iron oxide in lunar soil and steel is created as a byproduct.
As well as greatly improving carbon emissions efficiency, the process can be used in smaller factories. This lowers barriers of entry as newly established factories don’t have to produce millions of tons of steel to remain economical.
