How to do a skin check

Regular skin cancer checks are an essential part of your skin protection plan. Visit a skin cancer clinic near you every few years to determine your level of risk. Depending on your degree of risk, it’s advised to examine your own skin regularly, and report any changes to spots on your skin. Here’s a guide to checking your skin and what signs to look for.

  • Grab a friend or family member to help check hard to see areas such as your back, shoulders, neck and thighs. You can also do it alone with a mirror.
  • As a general rule, new or changing spots that look different than your other moles are suspect. Institutions such as SunSmart and the Cancer Council publish online informal pamphlets which provide guides that illustrate what types of skin formations need to be checked by a doctor. Check out their websites for more info.
  • When checking for suspicious spots, look for asymmetry, irregular borders, changes in colour, growth in diameter and different textures.

With this guide in mind, keep browsing through our online directory for skin clinics near you.
