Types of sewing machines

Thinking of buying a sewing machine or starting a new project? Why not learn about the kinds of machines. Below we’ve put together a few facts to help you:

  • Computerised /and electronic- Digitised machines with display screens and easily programmable stitching sequences and patterns. Contains downloadable material through an internet connection. However, they can have connectivity problems and may be quite expensive.
  • Mechanical- A perfect machine for starters wanting to learn sewing manually with all the basic functions. They can often be bought high quality at good prices. A downfall is they are often not suitable for thicker fabrics and materials and the need to repetitively needle.
  • Embroidery- Specifically for creation of textiles and patterns. Often used by fashion companies for decoration and through commercial product branding. Finding machines with sewing functions along embroidery can often be a challenge.
  • Overlocker- Used for serging, or producing stitches to sew over one or more pieces of material. Favoured by professionals especially in the garment and textile industry.
