How industrial wastewater treatment works

The basic function of sewage treatment is to speed up the natural processes by which water is purified. There are two basic stages to this process.

The primary treatment involves filtering large floating objects such as sticks or fabrics. Sewage is then passed through the grit chamber, where sand, cinders and small stones settle at the bottom. Next is the sedimentation tank, where biofluids settle into a sludge-like substance.

Secondary treatment removes a majority of organic matter by using bacteria and filtration. Sludge is processed and used as fertiliser or incinerated. Effluent is either released into a stream or returned to the water management system to be used for irrigation.
