Common road safety signs and how they are used

To help keep roads safe, effective traffic signage and line marking is important and necessary. Here are some common road signs and line markings and when it is appropriate to use them.

  • Dividing lines. Line marking paint must be visible at night and can either be broken or continuous. Continuous lines are necessary when overtaking can be dangerous, either due to vision obstruction or speed.
  • “Keep clear” markings. These are used to allow vehicles to enter the lane when traffic is not moving. This is useful when a traffic light is nearby and it is often hard for a vehicle to enter the opposite lane.
  • Stop and give way lines. Line marking contractors can often paint continuous or broken lines across a lane to support the messaging of the associated signage.
  • Car park line marking and signage. Unless parking signs show otherwise, cars are allowed to parallel park given there is 3 metres between the parked car and the dividing line. Line marking and signage can allow you to control this.
