Different types of radio communication

It can be quite easy to be confused about VHF and UHF radio signals and the different types of radios. Read on to find out more about the different types of radios available.

  • Two-way radios can transmit and receive signals that are on the same frequency. This differs from broadcast receivers which only receives content. They are available in mobile, stationary base and hand-held portable configurations.
  • Hand-held radios are light and portable radios.
  • Marine radio, otherwise known as marine VHF radio or VHF radios, refer to radio frequencies between 156 and 174MHZ. A marine radio set is a combined transmitter and receiver that operates at these frequencies.
  • UHF radios, or ultra-high frequency radios, operate between frequencies of 300 MHz and 3000MHz. UHF handheld radios are generally more affordable than their lower frequency counterparts.
