What does a quantity surveyor do?

A quantity surveyor is a core advisor for a construction project. They are in charge of estimating and monitoring construction costs, from the feasibility stage of a construction project until the end of the construction period.

  • At the feasibility stage, they use their knowledge of various construction methods and cost planning to advise owners, architects and engineers on how to achieve their requirements in the most cost-effective way.
  • At the design stage, quantity surveying services ensure that design remains on budget, additions are offset by savings. They also prepare a ‘Bill of Quantities’ for use by contractors.
  • During construction, chartered quantity surveyors are called on to deal with design changes and fairly value the progress payments at regular intervals.
  • After construction is completed, they may also be involved with tax depreciation schedules, replacement cost estimation, insurance valuation, and arbitration.
